In Rearview: Venues
For the last 8 years I’ve been a patron and at times a regular to McGarveys Bar (previously known as Aldos). It’s a local bar on the Juniata side of Altoona, PA that could easily go unnoticed as you drive past. Come to think of it, I don’t even think there is really a sign outside of the place. I think all that’s there usually is a large vinyl banner advertising the next bigger show that’s planning to rock the place. And that’s an important thing to remember about this place.
Rich McGarvey, owner and often times your bartender has created a space that is about the music. If you’re looking to catch live music on a Friday or Saturday night in the fairly small city of Altoona, you can pick a variety of places. 80’s covers? Check. 2000’s alternative hits? Got it. Acoustic country? Most likely. But there’s only one place in town that is constantly bringing in different styles of music. Some of the coolest shows I’ve ever gone to happen right at McGarvey’s. From The Reverend Horton Heat to The Supersuckers, The Vibrators and Southern Culture on the Skids to the U.S Bombs, there’s killer bands making stops here often. Back in the spring and all in one month you could spend every weekend seeing, The Tossers, The Toasters, Bastard Bearded Irishmen and Swingin Utters. I mean sometimes it stresses me out because my own life gets in the way of going to see these shows!
When you step into the bar, it’s fairly dim. On the side where you enter, there’s a long bar with four or five tables around. There’s a pool table, and some other odds and ends probably closely relating to a local bar in your area. But, then directly to the left separated by a few pillars and a doorway is a room that has a stage, standing area and tables in the back. It’s the perfect place for an intimate show with your closest friends or strangers. There’s nothing fancy about the inside of this place and there doesn’t need to be. It’s got all the right elements to host bands for some unforgettable or regrettably forgettable nights. There’s about nine beers on tap with a larger selection of bottled beers and a wide array of spirits. Pretty sure if you want wine, Rich has you covered there too! Not only does McGarvey’s offer some of the best live music in the area, but you can also stop in early for dinner. My boyfriend recommends the wings 😉
I really just want to put this place on the map and will continue to promote this venue often because the work Rich puts into bringing bigger acts to the area is amazing and every person that has ever gotten to enjoy a band there because of his efforts appreciates him for it.
Be sure to check out McGarvey’s Facebook page and check out what shows are coming up this fall.
This month you can catch The Goddamn Gallows and Bastard Bearded Irishmen and later in the fall former front-man of the Misfits, Michale Graves will be coming back to the stage.
