This past Friday, Altoona held its first ever Pride Parade and Punksylvania wanted to be there! There was no show to see. We just wanted to show support for our LGBTQ friends in the punk rock community and beyond. We love that people are diverse and are proud of those who open up to the world!
Neither of us had any idea what to expect. Would there be a lot of people or just enough to consider it a medium sized get together? Would there be people protesting the event or any coverage at all? It is central PA after all and some people in this area still find it hard to accept others who go against the “norm.” Although at this point, that’s just backwards thinking and out of touch with the time. Anyways, what we saw totally blew us away! The street was packed with supporters of all ages down to infants. It was AWESOME to see so much love. From Penn state Altoona student organizations to local businesses, support groups participated using their vehicles decked out in balloons and color for floats or had people walking in the parade.
Guess who wasn’t there? Not one single protester of the event, at least not from our view. So, thanks for staying home internet trolls.
With all the anger in the world and political & social differences tearing people apart, it was refreshing to be at a place so welcoming of everyone. We all deserve to fit in no matter how different we may be from the person standing next to us.
