I think that many of us have similar backgrounds and stories. We were weird, didn’t fit in, took more risks than other kids our ages, didn’t like authority. These are the reasons that we gravitated toward the punk rock scene in the first place. I have met some of the most badass people through going to shows over the years. So when I decided to attend Camp Anarchy in Ohio this past summer, I decided to use this wonderful tool called the Internet to connect with folks before I went. I found a Facebook group called Punks Pitching Tents and sent a request to join. This turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have ever made.
The group was originally created by Nic when the dates for Camp Anarchy 2018 were released. Immediately the response was huge. He then added Jamie, Terry, Mac, and Jason (a mix of both Americans and Canadians) as additional admins to help with the large influx of folks seeking information. The group currently encompasses past attendees and new members and has morphed into a community where we can all express our love for music and develop likeminded friendships.
I have only been on the Facebooks for a year now and this group was the first one that I ever joined and is the only one that I’m super active in. Over the past year, the members have become my family. They are loud, obnoxious, crude and I fit right in. Most importantly, they are kind, generous, and amazing people that love punk rock. It’s incredible how many friends that I have made within this group. I talk to many of them more frequently than I do to the people who are actually around me. They just get me. Shout out to my bitchy, old ladies!!!
I do a lot of traveling and show seeing for this blog and I do a lot of it solo. But being a member of this group means that I’m never alone. I’ve had a friend in the pit and a couch to crash on ever since. Usually they feed me pizza too!! Someday soon, I will be allowed to travel freely and will be able to visit my international friends. Get Canada ready, y’all!!
Thank you to Nic and the rest of the admins for giving a group of misfits a space to bond over our awkwardness and love of killer music. Even if Camp doesn’t happen next year, (Please Punk Rock Gods!!!!) I have made friends that will be with me for the rest of my life.
Wanna be a part of this ragtag crew?? Access the facebook page here and request to join!!!
