Released on November 4, 2017, Where’d You Get Your Values? is the latest EP by Lucky 33. This four piece punk band from Syracuse, New York delivers raw, in-your-face punk rock with lyrical content that is sure to relate to some aspect of your life. After seeing a few lineup changes, this the band’s first EP with guitar player, David Leffew, and it does not disappoint.
“Cursed” is the intro track and sets a great tone for the rest of the EP. With heavy bass and drums to kick it off, I immediately am reminded of NOFX. Listeners are introduced to Leffew quickly as he effortlessly joins in. A smart decision was made in choosing “Cursed” for the intro track, as it sets the tone for the rest of the album.
Slowing it down just a little bit, “Whoa” is one of the more melodic tracks on Values and is reminiscent of Lucky 33’s earlier material. “We’ll find another way, we’ll make it all okay, we’ll turn this thing around” happens to be one of my favorite lyrics on the EP and I find myself singing it over and over again.
I’m a sucker for chunky bass lines, and bassist Jared Francisco delivers on close to every track. However, the intro to PBR gets me stoked. The lyrics are catchy, yet relatable. We all want to drink our problems away sometimes, am I right?
Listeners are once again graced with that Fat Wreck-like sound as Leffew rips into “Paycheck.” In my opinion, this is the best put-together track on the EP. It’s fast, it’s catchy, and it’s lyrics are honest. Each band member seems to really play off each other and come together seamlessly during “Paycheck.”
“Not Today” slows the EP back down a bit as the band explores some different sounds before closing out with my favorite track, “Jimmy Steve.” Everything about this song seems to be a win for me. It starts off pretty slow, but builds up and brilliantly explodes. The chorus and breakdown are heavy hitters and remind me a lot of Avail, lyrically and instrumentally. “And with each day that passes, I’m not sure where I am. If I still knew the way, I’d come find you again,” gets me every single time! I like the deeper side of Lucky 33 and this song makes me extra excited for new material.
Since the release of Where’d You Get Your Values?, Lucky 33 has opened their very own recording studio and began working on their first full length album. You can catch Lucky 33 at the Battle of the Bands in Rochester, NY in April and at Camp Punksylvania this August in Tyrone, PA.
